Walking in Authority: 5 Tips

Much of our stress in life is a result of not walking in authority. As born again followers of Christ, we have authority. We just have to learn how to appropriate it. When we do, we place ourselves in a position of overcoming the distractions designed to destroy us.

None of us are exempt from difficulties. Day-to-day obligations cause us to burnout, preventing us from excelling. We desire to thrive, yet we only find ourselves surviving. If we’re honest, we can look back over our lives and see very little change. Why is this?

Much of our lack of movement in life is because we are not walking in authority.

God has personally shown me how a victim mentality kept me stuck in many areas. A victim mentality feels as though it is powerless to a situation. When operating from a victim mindset, you think thoughts such as: This is just how it is and I can’t do anything to change it.

That’s not the truth. The truth is: Many people have found themselves facing a similar struggle as I’m currently facing. How did they make it through? This is why I love reading biographies. They allow us to learn how people got to where they are now. We often place people on pedestals, but the truth is, we all have a journey and a story.

Our choices make all the difference. We have to start by getting our thinking right.

Walking in Authority: 5 Tips

1. Think Right.

Your thoughts are guiding your decisions. Your actions are merely results of your thoughts. If you are going to overcome your obstacles and begin walking in authority, you must begin to think right.

To think right is to think on God’s Word. It is making sure that the thoughts you think line up with what He says. If it doesn’t, throw it out. That simple. Don’t accept anything as truth that isn’t consistent with God’s Word.

Walking in authority has everything to do with how you think.

2. Seek Security.

In this world, we’re always seeking security. We work towards financial security, we secure housing and shelter, and we seek security in various other ways. We must realize that these elements, though important, do not provide ultimate security. Think about it. There are many circumstances that could hit us right now that would completely shatter the illusion that we’ve created regarding our security.

True security is only found in God.

To accept this truth gives you the ability to walk in authority, as you realize that only God provides a security that can never be shaken. In God, we have a foundation that will hold.

“Therefore whosever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”

– Matthew 7:24-25

3. Develop Routines

Walking in authority requires developing healthy routines. Establishing healthy routines will be the key to maintaining and walking in our God-given authority. As believers, we are constantly under attack. We must realize this truth and become motivated to establishing non-negotiable activities that will keep us spiritually strengthened. Discernment is a necessity, wisdom will be needed, humility must be sought, and these are just a few requirements of walking in authority.

Developing routines that keep God first in our lives will enable us to walk in authority.

4. Prioritize Growth.

In order to walk in the authority that God has bestowed upon His children, growth must be prioritized. We have to realize that we don’t have it all figured out, we can’t do it all on our own, and we are in dire need of a Shepherd. When we realize how flawed we are, we will humbly submit to His will and His Word, which will position us to be led by Him.

Walking in God-given authority isn’t about being a boss, but rather it is about doing God’s will. It is about having enough sense to know when something isn’t His will, and having the courage to stand against it.

5. Speak Right.

As you begin to think right, seek true security in God, develop healthy routines, and prioritize growth, you must begin to speak right. Once you start getting your insides right (your heart & your mind) by putting good stuff in, good stuff must come out.

You have to start declaring God’s Word over your life.

Personally, this has had a very profound effect on my life. It has changed how I feel about myself and my life, how I interact with others, how I work, etc. It’s all been changed by speaking right. And I’m not referring to speaking right publicly. I’m referring to speaking right privately. I’m referring to how you speak about yourself to yourself.

Walking in authority is all about applying God’s Word to yourself. You must accept it as true for you and your family. As you do, it will equip you to press on toward His will for your life- rejecting all that is not.
