INTROSPECTION: Why It’s Necessary

Do you make introspection a priority in your life? It seems there is always something to do, something always commanding/demanding our attention, which makes it hard to just get quiet. However, it is in those quiet times that we gain what we need to live. Though we live in a constantly moving world, we must take the time to ensure that we are not living from the outside in, but rather from the inside out. Introspection makes this possible.

According to Merriam-Webster, introspection is defined as:

“a reflective looking inward; an examination of one’s own thoughts and feelings.”

Introspection provides you the opportunity to really get to know you.

Do you take the time to deal with you? To understand why you do what you do?

Though it seems there is always stuff to do, we mustn’t overlook the importance of dealing with us. Who we are affects all that we do.

The quality of your life depends on you.

Don’t overlook the importance of introspection, as well as the many benefits that it can bring to your life.

Here are 10 benefits of introspection:

  1. Better understand yourself, including your desires, preferences, tendencies.
  2. Opportunity to reflect on your behavior, and think through root issues.
  3. Allows you to see and accept yourself for who you really are.
  4. Provides you the space to think through mistakes and identify areas for growth.
  5. Gives you the time to reconsider your values and priorities.
  6. Allows you to determine if you’re living in alignment with who God created you to be.
  7. Space to dream, visualize, and plan.
  8. Enables you to grow at a faster rate than you would without introspection.
  9. Helps you to receive feedback from others.
  10. Helps you to assess the condition of your heart, which is where all of our issues flow from.

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

– Proverbs 4:23

Introspection allows you to get to the heart of the matter. Your heart, that is.

Introspection is not easy, especially if we’ve conditioned ourselves to look at everything and everyone else as the issue. It may not be easy, but it is worth it! Introspection is necessary if we are to see ourselves accurately-which is a prerequisite for growth.

Without seeing and accepting ourselves for where we are, it is very unlikely that we will do what is necessary for change. Introspection prepares us for change.

As you focus on introspection, allow the Holy Spirit to lead you. Spend time in praise, prayer, and His Word so that you are in a position to hear from Him. Remember, God is an encourager- even when correcting us; while Satan is an accuser- aiming to condemn.

Pray for God to speak to you, lead you and guide you throughout the entire introspection process of focusing in on you! He is able to keep you in every way! Remember, growth is the goal!

Blessings to you!
