The Importance of Habits

What habits do you have in place? A lack of habits leads to a waste of time. If we are to maximize our time and use it in the best way possible, we must begin to see the importance of habits. I admit that the younger me did not like habits. I used to feel that they made life boring, but oh how my attitude has changed. I’ve grown to understand their importance in my life.

Habits save time.

Habits save time because they limit the number of things you have to think about in a day. Every day will present us with many decisions to make. Some situations we expect, others come by surprise. Having habits in place will allow you to save your brainpower for when you really need it. You shouldn’t wake up every morning and begin thinking through how you’ll start your day.

You should be able to wake up, start your morning habits, and allow your brain to prepare for the day’s work.

Habits ease stress.

Having habits in place will ease stress in your life. A major contributor to stress is overwhelm. A major contributor to overwhelm is being all over the place. Habits will allow you to streamline and be productive without feeling stressed. Habits also allow you to plan more accordingly, simultaneously easing overwhelm and stress. Consider your obligations and goals, factor in your time and scheduling, and establish the habits that will allow you to get your things done in the most efficient way possible.

Habits limit distractions

We all encounter distractions. When you take the time to establish habits, you are essentially preparing and guarding yourself against distractions. Think about the saying: A person who stands for nothing will fall for anything.

Your habits are what you stand for. Your habits are things that you already have in place. Establishing habits ahead of time will essentially act as a buffer against those things of lesser importance that aim to steal your time. Those things are also known as distractions. Putting habits in place will prevent you from being so easily distracted.

Habits keep you focused

Not only do habits limit distractions, but they also keep you focused. Think about it. The habits you put in place are there to help you support your goals. Habits are nothing more than the things you need to repeatedly do in order to be your best you and make your dreams come true.

Take some time to think about the habits you currently have in place. What do you do on a daily? Have you really put thought into your daily routines? It’s very easy to simply live on auto-pilot, without really processing how our day-to-day activities are affecting our lives.

Our habits are huge. Our habits are who we are. The more that we do things, the more engrained they become in our thinking, our actions, and our character. The more that we do things, the less thought we actually have to put into them. This works the same for healthy & unhealthy habits. So, though it may be difficult to establish new habits, it will get easier.

Take the time today to assess your current habits. Decide what needs to change. Create some lists and start changing today. Remember: change takes times and change is not easy. Accept that, but also consider the consequences of not changing. Change is not easy, but it is so worth it.

Accept the importance of habits and start implementing healthy habits that will move your life forward.
