It’s easier to get focused than it is to stay focused. Just as it’s easier to start something than it is to finish something. It’s even easier to decide to do right than it is to stay persistent in doing right. Why is this the case? We’re too easily distracted. If we are to make real progress in life, we must get focused & stay focused.
In order to stay focused on the most important things in life, we have to constantly remind ourselves of our priorities. We have to continually reflect to ensure we are keeping everything in its proper place. We have to constantly assess our heart to ensure that the right thing is in the #1 spot.
As Christians, the most important thing to us should be God.
“Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.”
– Matthew 22:36-38
If we are to keep Him first, we will have to be intentional. We have to put forth effort. If not, we will be distracted- often without even realizing it. Most of the time, people stray from God gradually. A little less focused on Him, a little less passionate, then before you know it… A complete disconnect.
We have to understand that many of the distractions that come our way are spiritual and can be tactics sent by Satan himself to distract us. Satan will offer us things in order to prevent us from keeping our eyes on God. He even tried it with Christ:
“Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.”
– Matthew 4:8-9
As always, as He is our perfect example, Jesus provides us the perfect response:
“Then saith Jesus unto him, ‘Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”
– Matthew 4:10
Though we may not see Satan face to face, we must know that we are constantly tempted. We must know that many situations and people that come our way are often distractions attempting to keep us from following Christ. Distractions distract us from God’s best for us.
We must be determined to get focused & stay focused.
Distractions aim to prevent you from fulfilling God’s purpose and plan for your life. You must not be entangled again in those things that once held you hostage.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
– Galatians 5:1
We have to continually remind ourselves that things are not always as they appear. It’s all spiritual.
How do we get focused & stay focused?
- Write out our priorities and refer to them often.
- Speak daily declarations.
- Commit to monthly goals & focus areas.
- Share your goals with someone that can help you stay focused.
- Memorize and keep key scriptures with you.
Above all, we must fight to keep Christ #1 in our lives. If we do, everything else will fall into place. If we don’t, everything else will be a struggle.
