It’s Feb. 19th, and if you’re like me, you may feel a little disconnected from your 2024 goals. So much has been going on that I’ve been finding myself just going and going, focusing on the next thing. This constant action has a way of making us feel disoriented or even a little discouraged. It is imperative that we are intentional to slow our pace so we can see where we’re really at. These are perfect opportunities for us to get back to the basics.
Getting back to the basics is about focusing on what truly matters.
Life has a way of distracting us. We can get so caught up in our activities that we forget our why. Everything that we do, should be linked by to our truest desires and goals. Often, we have to slow down to assess why we do what we do. When we do this, sometimes it’s about getting our heart in proper alignment with our activities. Other times, God may lead us to adjust our activities.
I do believe that today’s society aims to keep us so busy that we aren’t able to do the most important things. Schedules get so full so there is little time to simply be. We easily overlook the importance of connection, until we find ourselves in emotional desperation.
Getting back to the basics should include quality time.
All of our lives may differ, but one thing is the same. We all desire quality time. Our #1 focus regarding quality time should be with God. We can’t be so busy to not have time with Him. When this happens, we will slowly begin to experience other issues. For me, keeping God as my #1 keeps me anchored. He keeps me anchored spiritually, emotionally, mentally, relationally. He opens my eyes to those seemingly little things that I can do better at.
For the Christian, God must always be our #1. Apart from Him, we can do nothing [John 15:5]. We must abide in God in order to do the work that He has called us to do. The world has a way of pulling us away from our God-given calling. Getting back to the basics allows us to see things as they really are.
As we have so quickly found ourselves in mid-February, I pray that you are able to take the time to assess where you’re and get back to the basics. It’s easy to ditch the basics when we have made a little progress. We want to avoid that mistake and stick with what brought us this far. The same basics that brought us will be the same basics that keep us.
Take the time to assess your basics and recommit to doing what works. We must prioritize well, keep God as #1, and allow Him to lead us through everything else. He is able to help us and keep us from falling [Jude 1:24].
