FAMILY LIFE: 10 Ways to Celebrate Christ during Christmas

What is Christmas all about?  How does your family celebrate Christmas?  December 25th is the day that the world acknowledges the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but do we truly celebrate Christ during Christmas?

Do we spend more time exalting Santa Clause than Jesus Christ?  Do we spend more time shopping than praising God for the wonderful, perfect gift of Christ?

Throughout the last few years our family has been on a journey of making Christ the center of our Christmas.  First, we started by buying less stuff.  There is a tendency to just buy, buy, buy; but how is that celebrating Christ?

If we’re honest, we have turned Christmas into another opportunity to please self.

Secondly, we progressed from buying less to not opening our gifts on Christmas Day.  We began opening our gifts on Christmas Eve, leaving us Christmas Day to truly focus in on Christ.

Finally, I’m humbled and truly grateful to share that presently we don’t buy any gifts for Christmas.  Within our family, we each receive gifts on our own birthdays, leaving us Christmas Day to solely celebrate the birth of Christ.

As I share this, please know that I’m not sharing it from a place of pride- I’m surely not aiming to judge anyone.  My hope is to encourage us all to be more mindful of celebrating Christ on Christmas.

So, as we approach the Christmas season with it’s overly commercialized focus, I encourage you to be intentional about including Jesus in on your celebrations.  After all, it is His birthday.

10 Fun Ways to Celebrate Christ During Christmas:

1. Open gifts on Christmas Eve so that Christmas day is not about us, but rather about Christ.
2. Read about the birth of Christ on Christmas morning.
3. Have the kids write a letter to Jesus, not Santa.
4. Decorate mugs in ways that celebrate Jesus. Grab them at the dollar store for $1!
5. Have everyone in the family write a list of reasons why they love Jesus.
6. Go around and have everyone finish the following sentence: Because Jesus was born…
7. Take turns playing songs about Jesus.
8. Remind others that Christmas is about celebrating our Lord and Savior.
9. Use social media as a way to remind the world about the true meaning of Christmas instead of following suit and focusing on gifts.
10. Volunteer as a family and be reminded of how much you already have.

How will your family celebrate Christ?
