We live in a world where it’s easy to become obsessed with how other people feel about us. In this post, I share 5 reasons not to care what people think about you. Being overly concerned with how others feel about you is a sure way to keep you in bondage- preventing you from being all that Christ created you to be.
5 Reasons not to care what people think about you:
1. It creates fear.
When you are too concerned with what people think about you, you become afraid to do what’s truly best for you. You are fearful of how they will respond, what they will think, what they will say. We shouldn’t base our decisions on how people will respond, and we shouldn’t make decisions out of fear.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
– Psalm 27:1
2. It’s limiting.
When we care too much about what people think about us, we are limiting ourselves to what they see. What if your visions and plans are out of their realm of thinking and doing? What if your goals are beyond what others around you want to accomplish with even their own lives? Don’t let others dictate what’s best for you. Don’t let others limit you and define your life.
3. You become a people-pleaser.
I believe that more of us are people-pleasers than we’d like to admit. I said us because this is an area that I’ve grown in tremendously! Joyce Meyer’s book “Approval Addiction” is an awesome read for anyone that has a tendency to please. Our sole focus in life should not be to keep people happy. Nor, should we put pressure on others to keep us happy. Instead, we should be focused on doing what is pleasing to God. He has a way of navigating us through all of the decisions that come our way.
“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”
– Galatians 1:10
4. It’s distracting.
Focusing too much on what other people think is basically preventing you from focusing on your true priorities. We can’t control people and we can’t control what they think, so we shouldn’t distract ourselves by worrying about their thoughts toward us. Stay focused on your true priorities. Don’t be distracted by the opinions of others.
5. It’s confusing.
People change, their thoughts change, and their feelings change. Today you may like what someone thinks of you, but what happens when their feelings change? People’s feelings toward us are too inconsistent to put stock in. To prevent yourself from being disgruntled by the changing opinions of people, don’t focus too much on what they think about you to begin with.
