It’s so easy to waste time thinking about what we should have done. We think: If I would have done that I would be in a different place right now. We get frustrated and discouraged, crying over what we can’t change. The key is that some things we can’t change but some things we can.
Let’s focus on what we can change: Start where you are & stop looking back.
When we start where we are it is important to acknowledge what we should have done differently. We need to make note of what to do going forward so that we don’t repeat mistakes. We must acknowledge what we did wrong, but not dwell on it to the point of not moving forward.
The whole point in looking backward is to move forward. Looking back and dwelling on the past will only be a hindrance to your future if you’re not careful. The past has a way of trying to keep us trapped.
“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
– Philippians 3:13-14
You can’t run forward if you’re looking back. Daily, make the decision to start where you are.
The reason that we press forward is because there is more. God has more for us all. The reason we receive so much friction when moving forward in God is because most people don’t reach for more. They settle and even live in the past. We all have to make a decision to live our own lives, follow God, and receive all that He has for us- regardless of how anyone else feels about it.
This can be tough and I believe this is where most of us stop. We move forward to the point of people getting it, but when we experience friction we resort back to what’s comfortable. We settle, and we let go of what God has for us in order to please the people around us.
I’ve had to learn that it’s not my job to help people get what God is doing in my life. That would take up all of my time & energy. Instead, I follow God and trust Him to do what only He can do. I completely, without-a-doubt trust that God knows what’s best for me. He knows the depths of the hearts of us all. I know that I don’t know everything, which is why I trust and follow Him.
The reason things are in the past is because that’s where they belong. If the things in your past needed to be in your today then God would have them there. We must learn to trust God’s judgement, move with Him, and as they say:
Leave the past in the past.
In order to have hope for the future we must know that God has beautiful plans for us. His Word tells us that He does:
“For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
– Jeremiah 29:11
No matter what we face, we must always believe that God has plans for us. There is more, but in order to get there you must start where are are & stop looking back.
