I love when Jesus was on Earth and an expert asked Him “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” – Matthew 22:36
This expert was undoubtedly attempting to test or trick Jesus (like so many of them did), but Jesus’s answer was astonishing.
He replied “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Matthew 22:37-38
This is huge! He didn’t rattle off the 10 Commandments or tell us that he’d be taking church attendance. Now, don’t get me wrong I would never downplay any commandment of the Lord, but I am so thankful for this particular question and answer session.
As a Christian it can be so easy to get distracted or even imbalanced! We can even become critical of ourselves mistakenly thinking that Jesus expects perfection out of us, but we must remind ourselves of The Greatest Commandment.
We should focus less on rules and more on loving God. We should focus less on the wrong things that people have done to us and more on forgiving and loving them.
Let me clarify, I would never suggest to forget the rules because Jesus most definitely wants us to live a certain way. I’m suggesting that we keep our eyes on Him and allow Him to purify us and change our desires.
We should often remind ourselves that no one is perfect. We can never be perfect. We’ll all need forgiveness at times so this should make it easier to love and forgive others.
There is no doubt that life is filled with many responsibilities, but we should never forget The Greatest Commandment.
Whatever we do or wherever we go we should always keep God #1. That’s the greatest thing we can do- Love Him with everything we have.
