Right now I feel happy, but when I woke up this morning I felt discouraged. It seems that we all live on a roller coaster of happiness- going up and down with our emotions.
What is happiness?
Merriam-Webster define it as: a state of well-being, contentment, joy, or a pleasurable or satisfying experience.
It’s a rather simple definition, but it seems difficult for us all to get and STAY happy. We’re happy now but at the slightest shift in circumstance we are upset, discouraged, and depressed.
Why is this?
Personally, I feel I sometimes base my happiness on temporary, even unpredictable situations. For example, if I’m enjoying my classes I’m happy. If I have tons of money in the bank I’m happy. Or, if my hair lays just right I’m happy.
So, do I just let my happiness go out of the window when my classes suck, I’m broke, and my hair’s a mess?
This is when we fix our attention to things that really matter. The simple things that we tend to overlook.
We think about God and his goodness and all he’s done for us. This is sure to make us happy. We realize that we’re walking, talking, and thinking- while some can’t. This should also make us happy.
Or we just stop and look at the big, blue sky. It’s massive and beautiful. Look at the birds, they’re not worrying, they’re just flying.
The point is that we should find happiness in the little things. Slow down, stop worrying, and recognize the beauty that’s all around us.
We all have many reasons to be happy. Be content and embrace your happiness.
